The Centers for Disease Control Foundation estimates that each year, on average, five to 20 percent of the U.S. population gets the flu, tens of thousands are hospitalized, and thousands die from flu-related symptoms. While flu season periods vary, the disease generally begins around October, peaks in December, and lingers through late winter and sometimes into early spring. So, now’s the time to gather your arsenal of weapons to battle this bane of otherwise healthy people. A good place to start is here with our Flu Forecast. In this special section, you’ll read about how to avoid the flu in public spaces such as the workplace, differentiating cold vs. flu, and debunked flu myths.

Hearing loss is a common problem among older adults. According to the National Institute on Aging, about a third of people between the ages of 65 and 74 have hearing loss, as do almost half of those age 75 or older.

Also common is the belief that hearing loss is an inevitable part of the aging process. But is it?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, prompting us to consider the health of "the girls.” In 2018, an estimated 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 63,960 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer. While we think of breast cancer as a women’s disease, men can also be at risk. A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000, with 2,550 new cases expected in men in 2018. In this special section, we highlight the latest technologies to diagnose breast cancer, as well as tips to help prevent the disease.

As annoying as it can be, coughing is a valuable weapon in the body’s self-defense arsenal. Coughing keeps airways clear by quickly expelling intruders from the lower respiratory system, primarily the throat and upper lungs. If dust, fluid, viruses, bacteria, or other substances irritate or block any part of this region, the cough reflex takes immediate action.

It’s a fact that men tend to die at a younger age than women. (The current life expectancy for men is 76 compared to 81 for females.) Studies show a mix of factors contribute to men’s earlier demise – men tend to take more risks, are less socially connected, and have more dangerous jobs than women. But there’s another simple and avoidable reason: Men don’t visit doctors as often as women.

Doctors’ oral communication skills, on the other hand, are terribly important. Day in and day out, they communicate with patients, explaining diagnoses, treatment options, and potential side effects.

While most people look forward to spending time with family and friends feasting on turkey and stuffing and watching the parades and football games, for others it’s a very different story. Many people are alone this time of year. Others are homeless. Some are sick. Sadly, not everyone has a place to go and people with whom they can spend the holiday.

Over five million people in the U.S. suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease. It is a devastating illness that robs victims of their memories and ability to communicate. Art and music have been proven effective ways to help people communicate and express themselves, particularly individuals who can’t communicate well verbally. Some research has even suggested it slows the development of Alzheimer’s and helps patients remember and recall information easier. Consequently, senior care facilities often use music or art therapy to help people deal with their illness.

It’s said that you’re never really "old” until you start having balance issues, and that you can always tell a person’s physical age by how well they move around without falling, or experiencing fear of falling. Getting out of your car, walking through a store, opening a door, and putting on pants all require balance and coordination, which are an important part of everyday life. Approximately 12.5 million Americans over the age of 65 have a dizziness or balance problem that significantly interferes with their lives.

Although sometimes neglected or overlooked, the human body’s lowest extremities are complex and changes can often send alerts for the body’s overall health, according to Dr. Tyson Green, foot and ankle specialist with Center for Orthopaedics and director of the CHRISTUS St. Patrick Podiatric Medicine and Surgical Residency. "It’s not uncommon at all for a patient to come in for a concern about their foot – pain or a change in appearance – and that actually be a symptom of a different health problem. The human body has been called a marvel of bioengineering. No man-made system can come close to the inherent complexity, self-sufficiency and adaptability of a human being. But as amazing as our systems are, they aren’t perfect, and it’s inevitable that you will experience an inexplicable glitch—such as blushing or hiccups—from time to time.

Sure, reading books can improve your communication skills and teach you how to spell words and form sentences. But when you curl up with a good book, you're doing much more than that. Studies show that reading books reduces stress, strengthens intuition, staves off Alzheimer's disease, helps you sleep and makes you more empathetic. In other words: Books don't just make you a better reader. They make you a better you.

For many men, a trip to the doctor’s office is made only when something is wrong; it’s rarely ever self-initiated. Whether this relates to a lack of time or simply a lack of motivation doesn’t really matter because, in reality, nobody should care about your health more than you.

Just as many of us gravitate toward certain colors (vibrant oranges can be fun for some, but too intense for others) or television channels (Food Network, anyone?), there are workout routines that can fit your natural preferences.

It's difficult to appreciate how much we rely on our joints until the day comes when they ache—so much so that it wakes us up at night or prevents us from walking, lifting or bending over. For millions of Americans, joint pain isn't just a dull, disappearing pain that comes with overexertion or fatigue. It's a constant pain that affects the activities of daily living. When the pain surpasses the ability to function properly, sufferers are left with treatment options that range from medication to joint replacement.

Just as the left foot balances the right and the right arm balances the left, nearly every major muscle in the human body has a corresponding muscle group that carries out the opposite function. Take your biceps and triceps for example. The even matchup created by this pair lets you bend and straighten your elbow without any thought. This is a natural process for the body for not only this pair, but many others.

For Roxie Buroughs, something as simple as putting one foot in front of the other was a pain-filled endeavor. After suffering with hip problems for years; problems that included a hairline fracture and pins to stabilize both joints, she was dealing with nearly constant pain and very limited mobility. Then she fell and broke her left hip in 2011. Her orthopaedic specialist, Dr. George J. Trappey, with Center for Orthopaedics, recommended a total hip replacement. "I was ready for relief and trusted Dr. Trappey. The procedure he recommended seemed like it could be a great solution for my ongoing hip struggles.”

You’re lying in bed watching the seconds on the clock turn to minutes and then hours, growing ever frustrated, trying to figure out why you can’t just drift off to sleep.

Having a stare-down with your alarm clock can leave you feeling stressed out and exhausted the next day. Faced with working, keeping a house and raising children, it’s difficult to fit it all into one day. It’s no wonder our thoughts drift to what we didn’t get done.

We're all taught that practice makes perfect, and that repetition leads to success. While that may be true, it's also true that repetition can lead to overuse injuries when it comes to certain types of activities.

It's usually innocent things like pecans, shrimp, or egg whites; or it could be a medication or a bee sting. These everyday things have the potential to send someone into a life-threatening emergency very quickly if they are severely allergic to them.

Several medicines are effective at lowering blood cholesterol levels - a key factor in good heart health. Chief among them are the statins.
