Pantone’s Color of the Year: Peach Fuzz
by Taylor Trahan Henry
As we ooh and ahh over the trends of 2024, we’d be remiss not to spotlight Peach Fuzz, a hue that encapsulates the essence of warmth, sophistication, and timeless charm. Chosen by Pantone, the world’s trusted voice on all things color, this hue is sure to be a winning choice anywhere it’s incorporated – from home décor to fashion finds!
Celebrating its 25th year in 2024, the Pantone Color of the Year program has grown into a globally iconic cultural touchstone. Originally conceived in 1999, the program aims to explore the intricate relationship between culture and color, showcasing how the unfolding narrative of our global culture is expressed and reflected through the language of color.
Over the years, Pantone’s Color of the Year has become an influential force, capturing the imagination of designers, brands, and consumers worldwide. This milestone anniversary prompts reflection on the program’s legacy, highlighting its profound impact on various industries, from fashion and cosmetics to home furnishings and beyond.
The journey to select the Pantone Color of the Year involves a meticulous process led by a team of global color experts at the Pantone Color Institute. Drawing inspiration from diverse sources such as the entertainment industry, art collections, fashion, travel destinations, and socio-economic conditions, the team navigates the vast landscape of influences that shape our cultural zeitgeist.
Contrary to common misconceptions, the selection process isn’t a singular event but rather an ongoing, fluid conversation among color-attuned experts. These color anthropologists, hailing from diverse design, cultural, and geographical backgrounds, unite their expertise to interpret the global mood and translate it into the language of color.
In a world where color is our most powerful communication tool, the Pantone Color of the Year program becomes a catalyst for change. It prompts companies to recognize the impact of color on consumer decisions and encourages individuals to be conscious of the messages they convey through the colors they choose. The program is a celebration of the visual language we all understand, a language that transcends boundaries and fosters a more expressive, closely connected society.
This year, you’re sure to find Peach Fuzz in all sorts of places. From runways to restaurants, artists of all kinds will be looking to incorporate this dreamy color. But this enchanting color isn’t just for high fashion! Look for home accents, trendy threads, and popular items to come out with a peachy punch.
New Year, New Trends
by Kerry Andersen
The New Year is always an opportune time to refresh your wardrobe, update your makeup, and try out a new hairstyle. Expressing yourself through hair and makeup is a fun way to try out the latest trends to see what works for you and helps you avoid the dreaded beauty rut. AnnaBeth Guillory is one of the owners at Blush Co. Salon and Beauty Bar in Lake Charles and gave us a rundown of what she’s excited about for hair, makeup, and skin as we head into 2024!
Hair
Updating your hairstyle is the fastest way to refresh your overall look. “My salon team is brushing up on razor cutting techniques as they prepare to give clients tons of layers and texture in the New Year ,” says Guillory. “Popular cuts will be choppy bobs that are a bit more laid-back, dramatic side bangs, and long butterfly layers.” To keep those playful layers bouncy and smooth, Blush stylists swear by Kevin Murphy’s Ever.Bounce – a heat activated blow dry spray that locks out humidity and frizz, seals in body, and just keeps your hair looking good longer. Kevin Murphy’s Body.Mass is another stylist’s secret. “The leave-in conditioning treatment uses the same technology that thickens eyelashes to plump up thinning hair strands with weightless volume without leaving your hair crunchy,” says Guillory.
The biggest hair color trend for 2024 will have you seeing red! Specifically, the copper penny shade of red. This shiny shade has been cropping up on style influencers and Hollywood leading ladies and will be a top trend this year along with other vibrant shades of red. However, if red is too bold for you, bright blondes will also be on trend.
As far as hair accessories go, headbands are here to stay with an endless selection of fabrics and styles including leather and shine. Buns and bows round out the hot hair trend list. The classic updo returns but is getting new life adorned with supersize bows. You can easily create this trend by picking up some black velvet ribbon at the craft store, tie your hair up, and unleash a fashionable girly-girl look in a few seconds flat.
Makeup
If you’ve been using the same makeup products for a few years (or longer), it’s a perfect time to clear out your makeup bag and update your look. “First and foremost, no more dramatic and heavy winged eyeliner; leave it in 2016, sis,” says Guillory. The same goes for matte powders. To look fresh in 2024, replace heavy powders with more liquid and cream products. Cream contour and blush will give you glowing (not glittering) radiant makeup looks.
Great news for lip-gloss lovers; glossy lips are back too. Pair a neutral lipliner with a sheer gloss for an of-the-moment look. Hybrid lip oils will grow in popularity too in shades like cherry cola for a modern look. “The overall focus now when it comes to makeup is that less is more,” Guillory says. “It’s all about embracing and enhancing your natural beauty instead of covering it up.”
That concept extends to the eyes as well. While laminated brows will continue to be popular in 2024, customers are now asking for more natural looking eyebrow and lash treatments in place of the dramatic brow treatments of recent years.
Skincare
When makeup is light and natural, the skin underneath must be flawless! “If you add one product to your skincare regime it should be salicylic acid,” Guillory says. “The ingredient helps clear and prevent breakouts and reduces the appearance of blackheads. After that, invest in a high quality broad spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from the UVA rays that cause cancer and aging.” She suggests always reading product labels because often generic or lower cost sunscreens don’t offer crucial UVA protection.
The term ‘glass skin’ is more than just a catchphrase. Originating in Korea, the phrase refers to the trend of using lots of hydrating products to make skin look like newly polished glass. You can achieve it by using hyaluronic acid serums, niacinamide, and hydrating moisturizers. The Blush team expects to give lots of facials and chemical peels in 2024 too to help their clients put their best face forward in the New Year.
Another skin trend growing in popularity is a customized skincare routine with products formulated just for your specific skin concerns. Brands such as Proven and Curology offer an online quiz to determine your specific skincare needs and send you a customized product regime based on the quiz results. Bottom line – fresh healthy skin is in!
2024 Trends in Fashion
by Taylor Trahan Henry
The new year is set to unfold as a celebration of personal style, where each woman’s wardrobe serves as her unique canvas for self-expression. Look for accessories to be bold and personality-defining. From dainty jewels to embellished headbands, nothing is off limits when it comes to this year’s go-to looks.
Wardrobe basics will once again take center stage, emphasizing the enduring appeal of solid button-downs and classic crew necks. These timeless pieces prove to be versatile essentials, effortlessly transitioning from the office to casual settings. Paired with wide-leg trousers and the perfect pump, they exude sophistication for a professional look. Alternatively, when matched with jeans and sneakers, they effortlessly embrace a laid-back, casual vibe, reflecting the dynamic nature of modern lifestyles.
Preppy styles will make a notable resurgence, with a sophisticated array of blazers, pleats, and cable-knit sweaters. Footwear, too, embraced the preppy aesthetic, with chunky Mary-Jane-styled shoes making a bold statement. This revival brings back a time where classic elegance met contemporary flair, creating ensembles that seamlessly blended refinement and playfulness.
The echoes of the 90s and early 2000s are moving through the fashion landscape, breathing new life into high-waisted jeans, maxi skirts, and cargo pants. The return of light-washed denim also adds a nostalgic touch, inviting a wave of reminiscent fashion moments. As women embrace these throwback styles, they find themselves navigating the intersection of past and present, crafting looks that are both familiar and refreshingly modern.
Bow accents will continue to be popular, gracing both hairstyles and clothing with a classic and whimsical touch. Whether they adorn a chic updo or serving as a charming embellishment on sweaters, bows are the epitome of timeless femininity. This playful addition showcases how even the smallest details can make a significant impact.
No matter which fashion trend you choose to embrace, one theme cuts all the way through – making style your own will always be a win. Gone are the days when everyone in attendance at a particular event was in the same style of clothing, just a different color. Now, whether it’s office or date night, cocktail or casual, you can spot a personality from a mile away.
