March 2022Go Bold This Spring
Hair trends springing forward.
by Haley Armand Tarasiewicz
As spring ushers in new beginnings, it welcomes a host of brand-new hair styles to get excited about! This year, it’s all about the 90s-inspired layers, air-dried texture, fringes and more. But don’t be surprised to see some ‘oomph!’ After all the effortless and natural look of the last two low-key beauty years, people are ready to make changes by switching to sleek, straight styles—think tight ponytails, and short cuts—anything from chic bobs to big chops!
“People have spent a lot of time online the last few years, thanks to the pandemic,” said Kati Passant-McDonald, cosmetologist, hair stylist and owner of The Hive. “People are exposed to beauty trends in a way they’ve never been before thanks to apps like Instagram and TikTok. This influence is encouraging people to be bold and experiment with a wide range of looks, stepping outside their comfort zone and elevating their hair. The trends this spring will have something in store for everyone, no matter the style.”
McDonald says these looks are set to take-off as quickly as Louisiana temperatures rise!
Elevated Topknots—With things like bold, colorful eyeshadows taking over the world, we are going to see a lot more updos that allow people to show off their glam. People are wearing bright colors, incorporating geometrics lines and aren’t wanting to hide behind their hair. It will be all about keeping your strands out of your face in chic high buns.
Pixies and Nixies—Disheveled pixies and nixies (nearly pixie) are going to be huge through the summer. The cut should feature a heavy fringe and a graduated round shape with textured layers throughout. This style is ideal for hair with natural movement. It can be dressed up or worn relaxed with natural texture.
Babylight Bangs—Blondes are getting warmer, and curtain bangs are still a huge trend. They are an effortless way to freshen up your look, suit any face shape and can be cut into short or longer hair. A mix of honey-blonde tones with golden-blonde babylights all over the hair from roots to the ends will help with a face-framing, ‘kissed by the sun’ glow.
Voluminous Curls—Expect to see curls of all types. If you have naturally curly hair, embrace it and get a haircut that shows a powerful and playful shape that allows your natural texture to really shine—think rounded shape with lots of layers and shags, to help shape curls into the roundest form possible.
Full-Fringe Shag—If you want a new cut but aren’t ready to lose your long hair, go for a full fringe shag. Ask for something with lots of layers, volume, bangs, face-framing and length. This style is for anyone who wants a transformation without committing to a drastic change.
Soft-Serve Mullet—This grungy hairstyle can look pretty. A soft-serve mullet is great for someone who wants to add texture and volume to their style with a delicate edge. It’s a bi-level cut that focuses on the contrast between the disconnected silhouette and soft perimeter. Bonus? It grows into a beautiful, long-layered shag overtime.
Air-Dried Textures—Think less-is-more styling, where hair is left to do its own thing. This works on all hair colors, but the texture really complements a balayage technique.
