Devin Fontenot, Attorney At Law
Devin Fontenot grew up in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and originally had plans to work in law enforcement. He was pursing a degree in criminal justice at McNeese while there was a large stipend available for police officers with a college degree. During his last semester, the stipend program ended. Faced with a pivot in direction at the end of his college career, he decided on law school. “I wanted a career where i could provide a good life for my family and future children and that would provide me the availability to be present for my future children’s events,” he says. A law degree would allow him to still be able to protect people, just in a different way.
Fontenot attended and graduated from Southern University Law Center, among the top 10 students in his class. Ironically, while in law school he reaffirmed that he would not choose family law as a specialty. As life would have it, opportunities led him to family law anyway.
“When I graduated from law school, I was looking for a job in Lake Charles and was hired by John Green, Jr., who took a chance on me,” he says. “I consider John one of the best in town and he was a great mentor. His main area of practice was family law. After working family law cases for five years, I developed the skills, knowledge and love for family law.” He would work with John Green, Jr. for five years before branching out to found his own law firm.
Fontenot specializes in family law, criminal defense and personal injury cases. As far as his family law experience goes, he says, “It’s a tough area to practice, but the highs are high and it provides me with a sense of satisfaction I haven’t found in other areas of law.”
Fontenot is also the contract attorney for OASIS a Safehaven, a nonprofit domestic abuse shelter. “My role with them is prosecuting the protective orders filed by survivors of domestic violence. I’ve always been one who stands up for those being trampled on or abused, and acting as their attorney allows me to advocate for those who have not been able to protect themselves prior to my involvement.”
What Fontenot wants everyone to know is the success of a case is highly dependent on the facts. Therefore, even the best attorney might not be able to land you a win if you proceed in court.
“In family court, ‘losing’ is a relative term,” he says. “Having a good attorney helps, but in the end, the facts of the case are what matter. The lawyer’s job is to present the facts to the court while putting the client in the best favorable position. In cases where the facts are not favorable to a client, a good lawyer will advise the client to get out ahead of the situation and fix the issues prior to court. If the client listens, the ‘loss’ in court can be mitigated significantly. I’ve seen cases where a client rehabilitated a situation where they would have lost custody to maintaining/regaining custody simply because they followed the advice of the attorney.”
Choosing your lawyer carefully is one the most important aspects relevant to your situation. Fontenot advises, “Do not choose a ‘yes man’ attorney who will agree with you without question. You’re looking for someone who will tell you how it is and be up front with you if you are not doing what needs to be done. Don’t be afraid to consult with multiple attorneys if you’re unsure.”
SWLA Injury Attorneys
Before Rachel Couvillion represented injury victims in Southwest Louisiana, she spent years on the other side of the table, defending the insurance companies she now goes up against. Starting in 2012, Couvillion was a partner in an insurance defense firm. “I spent years defending insurance companies before I moved to representing injury victims,” she says.

Couvillion began representing injury victims in 2019, working alongside Jason Bell and Mike Williamson. The three went on to found SWLA Injury Attorneys, bringing years of combined experience to the firm. As a kid, Couvillion argued about everything. Her mom used to tell her she’d end up a lawyer. “Now that I’m a mom myself, I understand she meant I was stubborn and always arguing my point of view. Turns out that’s not a bad foundation for a legal career.”
Being a lawyer requires a certain skill set that was a natural fit for Couvillion. “I’ve always excelled at analytical thinking, writing, and oral argument. I graduated from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law summa cum laude in 2011, completed a judicial clerkship, and have been litigating ever since. Mom was right!”
For Couvillion, what makes the job fulfilling is helping the average person overcome adversity. “When someone calls me, they’re usually dealing with pain, medical bills, and an insurance company that isn’t on their side. I know how to help them. I have the experience to give them peace of mind and help them come out the other side of a bad experience.”
When it comes to choosing the best lawyer for your situation, Couvillion recommends looking past first impressions to what a lawyer has actually accomplished for past clients. “Look at their track record first, what they’ve actually done, not just what they say they do. The right lawyer has both the experience to back up their word and the presence to make sure you never feel like just a case file.
