Tips for Homecoming Florals with The Flower Shop of Lake Charles

Homecoming corsages and boutonnieres have been around for centuries. While currently associated with formal events, these wearable floral pieces have their origins in ancient history. They were worn to show support during wars or sporting events. They were also used to mask smells and believed to keep away evil spirits. The pieces became associated with romance in the Victorian age and now are a staple at weddings and school dances. But what does the tradition of exchanging these floral accessories for homecoming night look like in 2025? Thrive asked Kaila Ramos, owner and executive florist at The Flower Shop of Lake Charles, to find out. 

“Homecoming is one of my favorite times of the year. There’s just something so special about helping students get ready for their big night. I love when they come in with their dress photos or color ideas and we get to create something that makes them feel confident and celebrated. It’s not just about flowers, it’s about being part of those memories,” Ramos says. 

There is almost an endless supply of beautiful flowers in the world, but none can beat the timeless red rose for popularity and wearability. “Roses, either fresh or silk, are always a classic choice and probably the most popular, especially spray roses because of their size and durability,” Ramos says. While a standard choice, not everyone wants to follow the norm. “For students who want something a little different, I love using mums, daisies or even succulents. Each flower has its own personality, and I enjoy helping students pick something that reflects their style,” Ramos adds. Orchids are another popular choice. 

When it comes to creating a corsage or boutonniere, Ramos’ first step is to consider the outfit being worn and build from there. She requests photos or fabric samples for optimal color matching and also considers what the student wants and whether the design should be traditional or something out-of-the-box.  

One of the most important steps when considering a corsage or boutonniere, Ramos says, is to not wait until the last minute to start planning. “The earlier you order, the more options you’ll have for customizing your flowers. And don’t be afraid to add little details like ribbons, accents or sparkle. It’s your night to shine, and your flowers can be just as unique as you are.” 

Trends always expand and evolve over time, and Ramos says that not all girls are requesting wrist corsages. “We’re creating arms cuffs, finger ring corsages and even floral anklets. For boutonnieres, textured greenery and unique accents like berries or dried elements are very in style. Metallic ribbons and touches of glitter are also popular with students who want that extra pop.” 

Floral accents for homecoming celebrations can extend beyond just the corsage and boutonniere. “We often make small handheld bouquets for photos. It really makes the pictures feel extra special,” Ramos says. “Some families order arrangements for pre-dance dinners or even after-parties to dress up the table. Flowers have a way of elevating the whole experience and making homecoming feel like a true celebration. At the end of the day, I just want every student to walk out with flowers that make them smile and feel confident. If their corsage or boutonniere makes them light up when they put it on, then we’ve done our job.
